After two long seasons battling in the third tier, Stormers Sports Club has finally regained their spot in the Nigeria National League (NNL)—and they did it in dramatic fashion.

The scene was set on a sunny Sunday morning at the Olubadan Stadium in Ibadan, where Stormers SC, trailing on the table with just 3 points, needed a win against group leaders Real Sapphire FC, who came into the final matchday level on 4 points with Joy Cometh FC.

Elsewhere in Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, Joy Cometh FC had the seemingly easier task of facing an already-eliminated FC Ebedei side, which had nothing left to fight for after back-to-back losses. But football has a way of writing its own scripts.

Joy Cometh, despite their statistical edge, failed to capitalize. Their strikers misfired repeatedly, while FC Ebedei’s goalkeeper put on a clinic inside the Lekan Salami Stadium, pulling off heroic saves to hold the match goalless—a result that shattered Joy Cometh’s promotion dreams.

Back in Olubadan, the Stormers vs Real Sapphire clash lived up to its billing with end-to-end action and heart-stopping drama:

The match burst into life in the 8th minute when Real Sapphire had a golden opportunity to take the lead, but Michael Adewumi’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Stormers SC’s in-form goalkeeper, Godwin Azubogu. Just seven minutes later, Stormers struck first as Gabriel Agossevi found the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations in the stands. In the 63rd minute, Sapphire responded with a stunning equalizer from Jimoh Jamiu, momentarily putting their promotion hopes back on track.

However, with just seven minutes left on the clock and everything on the line, Lekan Aliu stepped up and delivered the decisive blow, scoring the crucial goal that sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory and secured Stormers SC’s return to the Nigeria National League.

With this win, Stormers SC leapfrogged both Joy Cometh and Real Sapphire, finishing top of the playoff group and clinching a well-earned return to the NNL.

This promotion is especially significant for Ogun State football, coming just a day after Gateway United was relegated to the Nationwide League One (NLO). For Abeokuta fans, the return of top-tier action is more than just a football result—it’s a reward for their unwavering support and a reason to celebrate.

The Stormers’ return to the NNL is a story of resilience, redemption, and rising from the ashes.
