There’s a solemn silence blanketing a home in Awka, Anambra State—a silence born not of peace, but of unbearable sorrow.

Inspector Okolie Amechi, a respected officer in the Anambra State Police Command, has died under the most heartbreaking of circumstances. On what seemed like an ordinary day, tragedy struck when his 10-year-old son accidentally fired his service AK-47 rifle, fatally wounding him. The same bullet also injured one of his siblings.

According to official confirmation from the state police command, the weapon has been recovered, and an investigation is currently ongoing.

But behind the headlines lies a family ripped apart. Neighbours describe Inspector Amechi as a devoted father and a proud officer who often spoke lovingly about his children. “He just wanted to protect and provide for them,” said one of his colleagues. “This is not the ending he deserved.”

The community in Awka abd social media is grappling with disbelief, asking how such a weapon was within reach of a child. And while the police promise a thorough investigation, no report can reverse what happened or ease the weight of guilt that may follow the young boy for life.
