The countdown to Nigeria’s biggest multi-sport event officially began as the Enugu State Government inaugurated the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 23rd National Sports Festival, aptly named the Coal City Games Enugu 2026.
Held on Wednesday in Enugu, the event marked a pivotal moment in the state’s preparations to host what is often referred to as “Nigeria’s Olympics.”

The inauguration was headlined by the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, who praised Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his proactive and visionary leadership.
“With the inauguration of this high-powered committee, we are confident that the Coal City Games will raise the bar in excellence, inclusion, and legacy,” said Olopade, reaffirming the NSC’s commitment to supporting the 2026 festival.

The LOC is chaired by Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jr., the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports. The committee boasts a robust lineup of experienced professionals, ensuring that all angles of festival planning—from logistics to legacy—are covered.
