The Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos witnessed yet another unforgettable chapter in Nigerian women’s football as Rivers Angels completed a dramatic comeback to defeat Nasarawa Amazons and lift their record-extending 10th President Federation Cup title on Saturday.

In a final that had everything—early goals, raw emotion, and nerves of steel—it was Rivers Angels who triumphed 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

A Nightmare Start, A Heroic Response

Few would have predicted a Rivers Angels victory after the first 45 minutes. Nasarawa Amazons struck early and twice—with Olusola Shobowale punishing defensive lapses in the 7th and 17th minutes. Her brace gave the Lafia side complete control and raised hopes of a second title for the Amazons.

But champions are made of sterner stuff.

Rivers Angels, under the guidance of Coach Tosan Blankson, regrouped and came out fighting after the break. Taiwo Ajibade sparked the comeback in the 57th minute with a composed finish, giving life to the Port Harcourt side. Just five minutes later, Taiwo Afolabi unleashed a fierce strike to draw level and silence the Amazons’ supporters.

With no extra time in the format, the match went straight to penalties—a situation where Rivers Angels kept their composure.

Sealed From the Spot

In the shootout, Rivers Angels converted four of their kicks, while Nasarawa Amazons managed just two. The decisive moment crowned Rivers Angels champions once more — their tenth Federation Cup triumph, more than any other club in both the men’s and women’s games in Nigeria.

The Road to Redemption

This victory wasn’t just about silverware. It was about redemption, resilience, and restoring pride. Rivers Angels had suffered heartbreak in previous finals — losing on penalties to Bayelsa Queens in 2023 and falling to Nasarawa Amazons in 2019. They did win the 2022 edition by edging Naija Ratels 1-0, but this year’s victory stands out for its sheer drama and determination.

Their journey to the final was marked by commanding performances:

  • 7-0 demolition of Moje Queens
  • 5-0 rout of First Mahi Babes
  • Quarterfinal penalty victory (3-1) over Remo Stars Ladies
  • Tense 1-0 semifinal win against Ibom Angels

The Stars Who Shone Bright

Several key players were pivotal. Goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi made crucial saves across the tournament, including in the penalty shootouts. Taiwo Afolabi, the midfield metronome, controlled games and scored decisive goals. Youngsters like Peace Effiong, Motunrayo Ezekiel, and Chidera Okenwa — all with youth national team experience — brought dynamism and grit.

Coach Tosan Blankson Speaks

After the final whistle, Coach Blankson hailed the character of his squad:

“We didn’t start well, but I told the girls to stay focused. I’m proud of how they responded. Coming back from two goals down shows their character.”

This triumph is not just another trophy — it is a statement. Rivers Angels have once again shown that when it matters most, they rise.
