The Flying Eagles of Nigeria began their 2025 WAFU B U20 Championship campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against hosts Ghana on Wednesday, July 10, at the Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

In a match that lived up to the hype of a West African derby, the Black Satellites drew first blood in the 26th minute. Their captain, Musbau Azeez, finished confidently to hand Ghana an early advantage, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

Moments later, Nigeria’s skipper Daniel Bameyi was booked for a tough challenge in the 33rd minute, a sign of the growing tension between both sides.

Despite Ghana’s dominance in the first half, the Flying Eagles refused to go down quietly. They steadily built pressure towards the end of the first half but were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval.

In the second half, Nigeria continued to push for an equaliser. A penalty appeal in the 66th minute was waved off by the referee, and a powerful free kick by defender Odinaka Okoro in the 76th minute barely missed the target.

The momentum continued to swing in Nigeria’s favour, and their persistence finally paid off in the 84th minute. After winning a corner, Mohammed Abdulahi rose highest to nod in a crucial equaliser that silenced the home crowd and restored hope for the Flying Eagles.

Nigeria’s next challenge will be against the Young Cheetahs of Benin Republic on Sunday, a must-win clash that could shape the trajectory of their campaign.
