The Super Falcons of Nigeria were left ruing missed chances after they played out a goalless draw with the Algeria women’s national team in the last Group B match of WAFCON 2025.
It was a night of dominance without reward for Nigeria, who had more of the ball, more shots, more corners, and more touches in the opposition box, yet somehow ended the match without a single goal to show for it.

From the opening whistle, the Nigerians imposed themselves on the game, recording 24 total shots compared to Algeria’s 1. They enjoyed 55% ball possession, made over 300 accurate passes, and created multiple promising chances. However, the final execution was lacking, as the team managed just two shots on target out of those 24.
One of the game’s defining moments came in the 54th minute, when Esther Okoronkwo replaced Ifeyinwa Onumonu, signaling a fresh attacking push. More substitutions followed as coach Justin Madugu rotated the squad in search of a breakthrough. Folashade Ijamilusi and Babajide Rinsola were brought on to add pace and width; still, Algeria stood firm, especially in defense, where they absorbed pressure and remained compact. Their resilience frustrated the Nigerian attack, which became increasingly desperate in the second half.

However, the Super Falcons lacked that final touch, and Algeria’s goalkeeper produced two important saves to keep the clean sheet.
In defense, Nigeria remained organized, conceding just one shot, which did not trouble the keeper. But in the end, the lack of clinical finishing in the final third proved costly.

This result leaves coach Madugu with more questions than answers as the team moves into the knockout stage of the competition. The positives lie in the control and intent Nigeria showed, but the inability to convert dominance into goals will be a key talking point going forward.
