The ruling All Progressives Congress has once again stamped its authority in Lagos politics, securing a sweeping victory in the recently concluded local government elections. According to official results released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), the APC clinched all 57 available chairmanship seats across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The party also won 375 out of the 376 councillorship seats contested, reinforcing its political stronghold over Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Despite the overwhelming win for the APC, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to pull off a rare upset in Ward D of the Yaba LCDA, where its candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu, emerged victorious. Dosunmu, a former APC member who recently defected to the PDP, narrowly defeated his former party’s candidate in what has become a symbolic triumph for the opposition in Lagos.

LASIEC described the elections as “largely peaceful” but acknowledged concerns raised by observers about low voter turnout and allegations of electoral irregularities in a few areas. Regardless, preparations are underway for the swearing-in of the newly elected chairmen and councillors later this month.
