In a pulsating Group D opener at the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), defending champions Senegal edged Nigeria 1-0 in a match that combined raw aggression with disciplined defending.
Played under the lights at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, the clash between two West African powerhouses lived up to expectations. With both teams fielding squads made up solely of home-based players, it was a true test of domestic league strength and tactical preparation.

Senegal, who lifted the 2022 CHAN title in Algeria, entered the contest with the poise of champions. But it was Nigeria, returning to the CHAN stage after a six-year absence, that brought early fire to the midfield. Nduka Junior and Raymond Tochukwu pressed with intensity, though their eagerness led to yellow cards within the first half-hour.
The opening 45 minutes were full of physical duels and tactical chess moves. Chances were rare but not absent. Nigeria’s Sikiru Alimi tested Senegalese goalkeeper Marc Diouf with a sharp effort, while Senegal responded through Daouda Ba and Moctar Koïté, whose long-range efforts kept the Super Eagles B alert.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute. Substitute Moctar Koïté, who had added energy on the right flank, surged past his marker and delivered a perfectly weighted ball into the box. Christian Gomis, timing his run to perfection, calmly swept home with his left foot.

It was a goal of composure and coordination—a moment that underlined Senegal’s ability to remain clinical under pressure.
With time ticking away, Nigeria rang the changes. Vincent Temitope and Godwin Obaje were thrown into the fray, and Temitope nearly pulled level with a curling effort that flew just wide. Jabbar Malik and Alimi also came close during a barrage of late set pieces.
But Senegal’s defence, marshalled by Seyni Ndiaye and Joseph Layousse, refused to buckle. Tactical changes from coach Souleymane Diallo—including the introduction of Bonaventure Fonseca and Pape Badji—helped slow Nigeria’s rhythm and protected their narrow lead.

In added time, Nigeria’s frustrations came to a head. Shola Adelani was penalized for handball, and despite one final push, the equalizer never came.
Senegal’s victory not only gives them three crucial points but also extends their CHAN dominance over fellow West African sides. This marks their sixth 1-0 win in the tournament’s history—a testament to their defensive resolve.
For Nigeria, the loss is a setback, but not a disaster. Head coach Éric Chelle remains confident, urging his side to regroup ahead of crucial clashes against Congo and Sudan.
