Nigeria’s journey at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) began on a shaky note as the home-based Super Eagles suffered a 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their Group D opener on Tuesday evening at the Amani Stadium in Tanzania.

Head coach Eric Chelle, tasked with leading Nigeria’s B team in the regional tournament, expressed his disappointment with the performance but remained focused on what comes next. Following the loss, he pinpointed three critical areas the team must urgently improve: their mindset, competitiveness, and aggression.

A second-half goal by Senegalese defender Christian Gomis proved to be the difference in a tightly contested match where both teams struggled to impose themselves in front of goal. While Nigeria showed flashes of promise, they lacked the mental and physical edge to take control of the match.

In his post-match press conference, Coach Chelle didn’t hold back. He acknowledged that while the loss stung, it was a wake-up call for his players.

“We need to improve our state of mind. We need to be more competitive and more aggressive,” Chelle stated.

The Malian tactician, who took over the reins ahead of the tournament, emphasized that the team must quickly adapt to the intensity and pressure of the CHAN stage if they are to progress beyond the group phase.

With Nigeria now sitting third in the Group D standings, the upcoming fixture against Sudan becomes a must-win encounter. A loss or draw could jeopardize Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the knockout rounds.

Nigeria will face Sudan next Tuesday in a fixture that could define their tournament. A positive result is vital not just for morale but for their standing in the group. The team will round off their group stage campaign against Congo, another tricky opponent capable of springing surprises.

Chelle and his technical crew are expected to make tactical adjustments and reinforce their call for mental discipline and fighting spirit ahead of the remaining games.
