Super Eagles Edge Rwanda as Arokodare’s Goal Secures Vital World Cup Qualifier Win

Nigeria’s pursuit of a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals received a much-needed boost in Uyo on Saturday as the Super Eagles edged Rwanda 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

It took a second-half strike from Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Tolu Arokodare in the 51st minute to hand Nigeria all three points in a tense contest against a resilient Amavubi side. The win takes the Eagles to 10 points in the qualifiers, keeping them in third place but still in contention for a ticket to North America.

South Africa remains six points ahead at the top after a 3-0 win over Lesotho on Friday. However, Bafana Bafana’s position is under review as FIFA considers docking them three points and three goals for fielding an ineligible player earlier in the campaign. Should that ruling hold, Nigeria’s chances of qualification will brighten considerably.

A gritty win in Uyo

The Eagles started on the front foot, with Victor Osimhen having the ball in the net as early as the 8th minute, only for his effort to be ruled offside. The Napoli striker was later forced off injured midway through the first half, raising concerns for Tuesday’s trip to Bloemfontein.

Rwanda’s goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari proved the visitors’ hero in the first half, pulling off superb saves to deny Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi.

Nigeria’s persistence eventually paid off in the second half when Arokodare capitalized on a goalmouth scramble to smash the ball home for his second international goal. Cyriel Dessers, Ndidi, and Simon Moses all went close afterward, but Ntwari’s brilliance kept Rwanda in the game.

The road ahead

Nigeria’s qualification hopes now hinge on two crucial fixtures: the high-stakes clash against South Africa in Bloemfontein on Tuesday and the final match against Benin Republic in October. The Cheetahs are currently in second place following their 1-0 win over Zimbabwe and will be formidable opponents.

Tuesday’s encounter against Bafana Bafana at Toyota Stadium promises to be a fiery contest, not only because of the historic rivalry between both nations but also due to the qualification implications. For both sides, second place offers no comfort; only victory keeps their World Cup dream alive.

With Osimhen’s fitness in doubt and South Africa in red-hot form, Nigeria will need resilience, tactical discipline, and clinical finishing to keep their campaign alive.

For now, Arokodare’s goal has given the Super Eagles renewed hope, and the nation turns its eyes to Bloemfontein for what could be a defining night in African World Cup qualifying.
