The Nigeria National League (NNL) has concluded its 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Fifth Chukker Resort Limited, Maraban Jos, Kaduna State. The meeting brought together key football stakeholders to map out the future of Nigeria’s most important football league.

The AGM opened with a special appreciation to the Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the people of Kaduna for successfully hosting the gathering.

The delegates also praised the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, for his leadership in steering Nigerian football forward. His efforts, alongside the support of the NFF board, were described as pivotal in strengthening the NNL.

Key Decisions from the AGM

  1. Kick-Off Date:
The 2025-2026 NNL season will officially begin with a star match on Saturday, November 8, featuring Lobi Stars of Makurdi against City FC of Abuja. Other fixtures from Matchday 1 will be played on November 14 and 15 across designated venues.
  2. New League Format:
Delegates approved an abridged format dividing the league into four conferences: A, B, C, and D.
  3. Promotion Structure:
The Super 8 playoff system has been abolished. Instead, the top team from each conference will earn direct promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
  4. Super 4 Tournament:
A Super 4 competition will now decide the overall NNL champion at the end of the season. Any club failing to participate in the tournament will lose its promotion spot, which will be handed to the runner-up of its respective conference.
  5. Stadium and Player Welfare Requirements:
Only stadiums that meet NNL standards will host matches. Clubs must also submit proof of insurance coverage for players and officials during registration.
  6. Financial Reports and Budget:
The AGM approved the 2024-2025 audited financial report and adopted the 2025-2026 budget as a working document.
  7. Match Balls:
Only Prostar/NNL-branded match balls will be used during the season. Any club failing to provide these official balls at home fixtures will face sanctions.
  8. Sponsorship and Support:
The board’s ongoing sponsorship efforts were commended, with hopes that negotiations will soon yield positive results.
  9. Vote of Confidence:
The AGM passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the NNL board led by Chief George Aluo, recognizing their achievements and commitment to improving the league’s standard.
