Nigeria’s women powerlifters have once again stamped their authority on the global stage, delivering a stellar performance at the 2025 World Powerlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt. Within just two days of competition, Team Nigeria claimed two gold medals and added two more podium finishes — a testament to the country’s growing dominance in the sport.
The first breakthrough came from Rita Ferdinand, who announced her arrival on the world stage in spectacular fashion. Competing in the women’s up to 79kg category, Ferdinand stunned the field by defeating China’s Miaoyu Han, the reigning Paralympic Champion and World Record holder. The Nigerian powerhouse lifted a staggering 153kg, setting a new African record and claiming her first-ever World Title.

Ferdinand’s gold not only opened Nigeria’s medal account but also set the tone for an inspiring campaign in Cairo.
On Day 2, veteran lifter Esther Oyema reminded the world why she remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated athletes. Returning to the world stage after a brief hiatus, Oyema powered her way to gold in the women’s 55kg category, lifting 125kg to secure victory. This marks her first World Title since 2024, reaffirming her status as one of the most consistent lifters in the sport.

Nigeria’s medal haul didn’t stop there. In the women’s 50kg category, Esther Nworgu narrowly missed out on gold after failing her final lift of 125kg. Her second lift of 120kg earned her a silver medal, while compatriot Rukayat Ajiboye claimed bronze in the same event, making it a clean sweep of medals for Nigeria in that class.
With four athletes competing so far — and all returning home with medals — the Nigerian team is proving unstoppable.
