“We’re here to write another page in Gabonese football history,” he said. “If Gabon wants to grow and move beyond the quarter-finals at future Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, we must learn to compete with the continent’s best — and Nigeria is one of them. This play-off is a decisive turning point for us.”
However, history offers a sobering reminder for the Panthers. In the last four decades, Gabon have managed just one victory over Nigeria — a statistic that underscores the uphill challenge they face against a team brimming with attacking power and experience.
The Super Eagles, who arrived in Rabat on Monday, boast a formidable lineup that includes Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and captain William Troost-Ekong. The team’s dominant 4–0 victory over Benin in their final qualifying match sent a clear message of intent to their continental rivals.
Troost-Ekong, however, remains cautious ahead of the fixture.
“Gabon is a solid team. Aubameyang leads a talented group that can cause real problems for defenders,” the Nigerian skipper warned. “In Africa, you should never underestimate any opponent — and we won’t make that mistake with Gabon.”
