Team Nigeria once again underlined its growing dominance in youth sports after finishing second on the athletics medals table at the ongoing African Youth Games in Angola, a performance that captured both promise and pride for the country’s sporting future.

Competing against Africa’s best emerging talents, Nigeria’s athletics team returned an impressive haul of 11 medals, made up of six gold and five silver medals, finishing just behind continental rivals South Africa, who topped the standings.

For observers of the African Youth Games, this result was more than just numbers on a table. It was a reflection of years of grassroots investment, school sports revival and the hunger of Nigerian teenagers eager to announce themselves on the continental stage.

Athletics Leads the Way

Nigeria’s athletes were a constant presence on the podium throughout the athletics events. From explosive sprints to tactical field events, the team displayed confidence, composure and technical maturity beyond their years.

The six gold medals were spread across multiple disciplines, highlighting depth rather than reliance on one standout performer. The five silver medals further reinforced Nigeria’s consistency, often finishing narrowly behind winners in fiercely contested finals.

Beach Volleyball Delivers Gold

Away from the track, Nigeria’s Beach Volleyball team added to the medal count with a well-earned gold medal. Their campaign was marked by discipline, teamwork and resilience, overcoming strong opposition in Angola’s challenging coastal conditions.

The victory further emphasized Nigeria’s expanding influence in sports beyond its traditional strongholds.

Badminton Breakthrough Performance

Nigeria’s Badminton team also enjoyed a standout outing at the Games, producing one of their best continental youth performances in recent years.

The team secured:

  • One gold medal in the Mixed Doubles event
  • Two silver medals
  • Three bronze medals

The Mixed Doubles gold was particularly significant, showcasing tactical intelligence and chemistry under pressure. The overall badminton haul signals steady growth in a sport that continues to gain momentum within Nigeria’s youth development framework.

Individual Brilliance in Golf and Swimming

In golf, Josephine Clement Benjamin rose to the occasion to claim a bronze medal, demonstrating calm and precision in a highly technical competition. Her performance stood out as a testament to Nigeria’s expanding footprint in nontraditional sports.

Swimming also delivered a moment of pride as Aidan Dumuje Abili powered his way to a bronze medal in the 50m backstroke, holding his own against some of Africa’s fastest young swimmers.
