Thirty-eight-year-old Beninese referee Djindo Louis Houngnandande has been appointed to officiate the final Group C encounter between the Cranes of Uganda and the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. With qualification implications hanging heavily over the fixture, the Confederation of African Football has turned to one of its most composed and experienced officials to handle the pressure.
Born on August 25, 1985, Houngnandande has steadily built a reputation as a calm and authoritative referee on the African stage. His résumé includes officiating in eight FIFA World Cup qualifiers across the continent, during which he issued twenty-eight yellow cards, one second yellow leading to dismissal, and notably no straight red cards. Those numbers reflect a referee who prefers control through communication rather than controversy.

This appointment marks the second time Houngnandande will officiate a match involving Nigeria and Uganda. The first was a friendly encounter in November 2018, a tightly contested affair that ended goalless. That match passed without major incidents, further underlining CAF’s confidence in his ability to manage encounters involving both sides.
Uganda are also familiar with the Beninese official in competitive settings. Houngnandande previously handled the Cranes during an AFCON qualification match against South Sudan, a game Uganda lost by a solitary goal. While the result was disappointing for the Cranes, the officiating drew little criticism, reinforcing his image as a referee who allows games to flow.

Beyond national team football, Houngnandande has also taken charge of key club fixtures on the continent, including the January 2021 CAF competition clash between Enyimba of Nigeria and Sudanese side Al Merrikh, which Enyimba won 2-1. His experience across both club and international football adds another layer of assurance ahead of this decisive Group C tie.
Interestingly, Houngnandande has found himself in the spotlight at this tournament before. Zambia head coach Avram Grant partly blamed his side’s early AFCON exit on the referee following Chipolopolo’s second group game against Tanzania. In that match, Houngnandande sent off defender Rodrick Kabwe and issued four yellow cards. Grant later insisted that Zambia’s campaign was effectively derailed by that officiating performance, even as he maintained pride in the progress made by his team.
Away from the controversies, Houngnandande has also attracted light-hearted attention for an unusual reason. He is one of the tournament officials with the longest surname, containing thirteen letters, a trivia point that has quietly circulated among AFCON followers.
