The Lagos State Government has taken another visible step in strengthening grassroots sports development with the official unveiling of the Sanwo-Olu Mini Stadium, an eight-a-side Astro Turf football pitch located under the Sura Bridge on Lagos Island.

The project, delivered through a strategic partnership between the Lagos State Government and leading tech brand TECNO, reflects Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s sustained commitment to youth empowerment, community engagement and accessible sports infrastructure across the state.

Once an underutilised space, the Sura under-bridge location has now been transformed into a modern football facility designed to serve young talents, local teams and sports lovers within the densely populated Lagos Island axis.

A Partnership Focused on Grassroots Football

The collaboration between Lagos State and TECNO represents a growing model of public-private partnerships aimed at solving long-standing infrastructure gaps in Nigerian sports.

By investing in mini stadia and community pitches, TECNO continues to position itself as a corporate brand committed not just to sports sponsorship but to long-term talent development from the grassroots.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, praised TECNO for embracing corporate social responsibility through sports infrastructure.

According to Fatodu, quality facilities remain a critical foundation for talent discovery and growth.

He noted that the Sanwo-Olu Mini Stadium is designed to nurture young players for both national and international opportunities, adding that infrastructure plays a decisive role in shaping sporting excellence.

Fatodu also assured stakeholders that the state government, in collaboration with the host community, would take responsibility for maintaining the facility to ensure its long-term impact.

Sanwo-Olu Administration Expands Mini Stadia Vision

The Lagos State Sports Commission boss further highlighted Governor Sanwo Olu’s broader vision for sports development, revealing that the state has already constructed eight mini stadia across different locations.

These facilities are deliberately positioned within communities to reduce barriers to access and encourage daily engagement with sports, especially among young people.

Fatodu encouraged more corporate organisations to look beyond football alone and invest in multi-sports facilities, stressing that Lagos is home to athletes with diverse interests who deserve suitable infrastructure to thrive.

Youth Engagement at the Heart of the Initiative

Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, described the project as a meaningful intervention aimed at redirecting young people toward productive activities.

Ogunlende emphasized that sports remains one of the most effective tools for taking youths off the streets while promoting discipline, teamwork and ambition.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration to creating platforms where young people can compete, grow and dream beyond local boundaries.

The commissioner also acknowledged that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of youth development, calling for sustained collaboration with the private sector.

According to him, the Sanwo-Olu Mini Stadium stands as evidence of what is possible when government and corporate organisations work together toward shared social goals.

TECNO Targets the Future of African Football

From the private sector perspective, TECNO’s Marketing Manager, Olumide Yomi Omolayo, stated that the company’s involvement goes beyond supporting today’s football stars.

He explained that TECNO is intentionally investing in the future of African football by creating environments where young talents can train, compete and develop from an early stage.

Omolayo noted that locating the project on Lagos Island was strategic, given the area’s rich football culture and concentration of young enthusiasts.

He expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Sports Commission for its support in delivering the project and reiterated TECNO’s commitment to grassroots football development across Africa.

A New Chapter for Community Sports in Lagos

The unveiling of the Sanwo-Olu Mini Stadium adds another chapter to Lagos State’s evolving sports infrastructure story.

Beyond football, the facility represents opportunity, inclusion and hope for many young people who now have access to a safe, modern and inspiring space to pursue their sporting dreams.

As Lagos continues to grow as Nigeria’s sports capital, partnerships like this signal a future where talent is no longer limited by lack of infrastructure but empowered by intentional investment and shared responsibility.
