NPFL Matchday 2 Results: Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves Stay Perfect as Plateau United Struggle

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 2 produced a mixture of thrilling victories, dramatic draws and early warning signs for struggling sides. From Bayelsa United’s dominance in Yenagoa to Plateau United’s disappointing start in Jos, the weekend’s fixtures underlined the unpredictability of Nigeria’s top flight.

Bendel Insurance 1-1 Shooting Stars At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, Bendel Insurance and Shooting Stars Sports Club shared the spoils in a heated 1-1 draw. Shooting Stars struck early through Ayodele I. in the 6th minute, but Oweilayefa A. quickly responded for Insurance in the 12th. The match grew tense with multiple cautions for the away side, and both managers turned to their bench to find a winner, but the points were split.

Bayelsa United 2-0 Barau FC Bayelsa United extended their perfect start to the season with a comfortable 2-0 victory at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. Ofem opened the scoring with a brilliant finish before Wisdom converted a penalty in the 58th minute. Shuaibu sealed the win in the 74th, keeping Bayelsa United joint top of the league table.

Nasarawa United 1-0 Abia Warriors In Lafia, Nasarawa United claimed their first win of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Abia Warriors. Ugochukwu L. struck in the 10th minute and the hosts held firm to protect their advantage.

Enyimba 1-0 Niger Tornadoes Enyimba International recorded their first points of the campaign with a 1-0 win against Niger Tornadoes in Aba. Abiodun J. scored as early as the 5th minute, ensuring the People’s Elephant bounced back from their opening day setback.

Rivers United 1-0 Kwara United Rivers United edged Kwara United 1-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt. Ubong F. netted the decisive goal in the 22nd minute, securing the Pride of Rivers’ first three points of the season.

Kano Pillars 1-1 Wikki Tourists Kano Pillars avoided defeat at home against Wikki Tourists in a match that ended 1-1. Lamido A. opened the scoring for the visitors in the 12th minute before Umar M. equalized for the Sai Masu Gida just before halftime. Wikki’s Ibrahim S. was booked in the 15th minute, while a series of substitutions shaped the second half but neither side could find a winner.

Plateau United 1-2 Katsina United In Jos, Plateau United suffered a second straight defeat as Katsina United claimed a 2-1 away victory. Sadiq Abubakar scored in the 13th minute for Katsina before Uche Collins doubled their lead on the hour mark. Plateau pulled one back, but it was not enough to rescue a point, leaving them bottom of the table with no points after two games.

Warri Wolves 2-0 Enugu Rangers Warri Wolves continued their strong start with a 2-0 win over Enugu Rangers. Godwin Oham broke the deadlock in the 48th minute and Prince Ebhohon sealed the points in the 77th. With two wins from two, Wolves are joint leaders alongside Bayelsa United.

Ikorodu City 0-0 El-Kanemi Warriors At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, Ikorodu City and El-Kanemi Warriors battled to a goalless draw. Both sides created chances but failed to convert, leaving them with a point each.

Kun Khalifa 1-2 Remo Stars Defending champions Remo Stars bounced back from their opening day draw with a 2-1 away victory against Kun Khalifa FC. The home side struck first in the 16th minute through Ezeonye H. from the penalty spot. However, goals from Abubakar I. in the 70th and Olasupo S. in the 78th turned the game in Remo Stars’ favor.

League Standings After Matchday 2 Bayelsa United and Warri Wolves are the only teams with maximum points, topping the table with six points each. At the other end, Plateau United have lost both matches and are yet to register a point.
