The opening day of the 2025 NWFL Super 6 came with one of the most unexpected upsets as Edo Queens, the defending champions, fell 1-0 to Remo Stars Ladies at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

Despite dominating possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities, the Queens were stunned in the 88th minute by a late goal from Olasubomi Ogundele. It was a crushing blow for the Benin-based side, who came into the tournament as favourites.

After the match, Coach Moses Aduku addressed the press with a message of calm resolve and unwavering belief in his team.

“We lost the game, but we are not out,” Aduku stated. “We’ll go back, regroup, and prepare for the next one.”

A History with Remo Stars—Now Rewritten

Edo Queens had previously met Remo Stars Ladies during the regular season. Their first meeting ended in a 1-1 draw in Benin, and the Queens won the reverse fixture. That history made Saturday’s defeat even more surprising, especially given the reigning champions’ experience.

“Yes, we’ve played them before and got results, but today was different,” Aduku admitted. “We created plenty of chances but just couldn’t convert. They got one slim chance and took it. That was the difference.”

Looking Ahead: All Eyes on Rivers Angels

With four more games to play in this tight six-team round-robin tournament, Coach Aduku is focused on turning the setback into motivation.

“Our next match is against Rivers Angels. We’ll approach it with a winning mentality. We have to come back stronger,” he said. “It’s all about taking our chances—today, we didn’t, and it cost us.”

Champions with a Point to Prove

Edo Queens are no strangers to pressure. As one of the most consistent teams in the Nigerian Women’s Football League, they’ve built a reputation for rising to challenges. Now, the challenge is to bounce back from an early setback and reignite their title defense.

“It’s not over,” Coach Aduku reminded. “We’ve been here before. We’ll regroup; we’ll respond.”
