Rivers United closed out the 2025 Nigeria Premier Football League season on a high note, cementing their place at the summit of the NPFL table with a narrow but significant 1–0 victory over Enugu Rangers at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The result takes the Pride of Rivers to 37 points after 19 matches, marking the halfway point of the NPFL season and giving them a healthy four-point cushion over their closest challengers. It was an evening defined by fine margins, discipline, and one moment of quality that separated two of Nigeria’s most storied clubs.

First Half Caution and Missed Chances

The encounter kicked off at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium with both sides showing early intent but exercising caution in possession. Rivers United enjoyed a territorial advantage in the opening exchanges, probing Rangers’ defensive shape without finding an early breakthrough.

At the 16th minute, Okon Aniekeme came closest to opening the scoring for the hosts, but his effort was well dealt with by the Rangers goalkeeper, who reacted quickly to deny Rivers United a deserved lead. Moments later, Maclyn Biokpo thought he had broken the deadlock, only for the assistant referee’s flag to rule him offside.

The game briefly halted in the 22nd minute following a clash of heads that left both players on the turf and required medical attention, disrupting the rhythm of play. Rivers United continued to press and earned a free kick just outside the box in the 29th minute, but Wasiu Falolu’s effort sailed off target.

Despite four minutes of added time at the end of the first half, neither side managed to find the breakthrough, and both teams headed into the dressing room level at 0–0.

Sholumade Delivers the Decisive Moment

Rivers United returned for the second half with renewed purpose, pushing Rangers deeper into their own half. The pressure finally paid off in the 52nd minute when Boluwaji Sholumade rose highest to head Rivers United into the lead, sending the home fans into celebration and underlining the club’s title credentials.

Rangers attempted an immediate response, but Rivers United goalkeeper Ani Ozomena produced a stunning close-range save in the 58th minute to preserve his side’s advantage.

The head coach responded with tactical changes in the 61st minute, introducing Timothy Zachariah and Osimaga Duke in place of Seyi Oguntayo and Okon Aniekeme to maintain energy and control in midfield. Duke was later booked in the 64th minute following a crunching challenge.

Further substitutions followed as Rivers United sought to manage the game, with Isaac Annor and Emmanuel Nnaji replacing Effimi Nsi and Wasiu Falolu in the 80th minute, while Samson Obi came on for Maclyn Biokpo late on.

Late Drama and VAR-Like Tension

The closing moments were filled with tension as Rangers pushed for an equaliser. The drama peaked when Rangers thought they had scored from a 90th-minute free kick, only for the goal to be ruled out after intense deliberation. Fine lines decided the outcome, and Rivers United held firm through four additional minutes of stoppage time.

At the final whistle, the scoreboard confirmed a vital 1–0 victory for Rivers United, ensuring they ended the year 2025 at the top of the NPFL standings.

NPFL Table Shake-Up at Year End

Elsewhere across the NPFL, significant results reshaped the top three. Abia Warriors recorded an impressive 1–0 away victory over Plateau United in Jos, while Kano Pillars dismantled Nasarawa United 3–0. Ikorodu City also claimed a narrow 1–0 win against Remo Stars.

As a result, Abia Warriors finish the year in second place with 33 points, while Ikorodu City sit third on 32 points, rounding off a tightly contested top end of the table as the NPFL heads into the second half of the season.

For Rivers United, this victory was more than just three points. It was a statement of intent, resilience, and consistency, setting the tone for what promises to be an intense title race in the months ahead.
