The Super Eagles of Nigeria will lock horns with Mozambique on 5 January at the Stade de Fes in what promises to be a fascinating Round of 16 encounter at the AFCON. Kick-off is scheduled for 20h00 local time, which is 19h00 GMT, as Nigeria continues their quest for continental glory against a Mozambican side making history of their own.
This meeting marks only the second time both nations will face each other at the Africa Cup of Nations finals. Their first and only AFCON meeting dates back to the final group game of the 2010 tournament, where Nigeria delivered a dominant 3-0 victory. Peter Odemwingie struck twice in quick succession just before and after halftime, while Obafemi Martins sealed the win late in the game.
Beyond AFCON, Nigeria and Mozambique have crossed paths five times across all competitions. The Super Eagles remain unbeaten with four wins and one draw, scoring six goals and conceding just two. That record further underlines Nigeria’s historical dominance in this fixture.
One of their most significant encounters came during the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which also doubled as AFCON qualifiers. After a goalless first leg in Maputo in March 2009, Nigeria edged the return leg in October through a dramatic Victor Obinna goal in second-half stoppage time. That victory ensured Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup and AFCON finals, with Mozambique also booking their place at the continental showpiece.

Their most recent meeting was a friendly international played in Albufeira, Portugal, in October 2023. Nigeria emerged 3-2 winners in an entertaining contest, with goals from Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka and Moses Simon, while Geny Catamo and Faisal found the net for Mozambique.
Nigeria’s AFCON Pedigree and Form
Nigeria arrive in the Round of 16 carrying momentum and history in equal measure. This is their 18th appearance in the direct knockout rounds. Remarkably, this is their 16th consecutive time reaching the knockout stages, having last failed to progress beyond the group stage in 1982.
The Super Eagles were flawless in the group phase, recording three wins from three matches against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda. It is the first time Nigeria have won all their group games since 2021 and only the fourth time overall they have achieved this feat at AFCON.

Nigeria scored eight goals in the group stage, their highest ever tally at this phase of the tournament, scoring at least twice in each game. That attacking fluency has seen them score in their last ten AFCON matches, their longest scoring streak in tournament history.
However, defensive concerns remain. Nigeria have conceded in their last five AFCON matches and are currently on 99 goals conceded in AFCON history. Another goal conceded would see them join the list of nations that have allowed 100 or more goals at the competition.
Individually, several players have stood out. Paul Onuachu became the 70th different Nigerian to score at AFCON, while Samuel Chukwueze produced one of his finest tournament displays against Uganda, creating five chances, making seven line-breaking passes and registering his first two AFCON assists in his 16th appearance. Raphael Onyedika also announced himself with two goals, both his first at the tournament.

Nigeria have progressed from the Round of 16 twice in their last three appearances, defeating Cameroon in 2019 and 2023, with the only setback coming against Tunisia in 2021. Victory over Mozambique would send Nigeria into the quarter-finals for the 12th time, a stage they have failed to reach just once since its introduction in 1992.
Mozambique’s Historic Breakthrough
For Mozambique, simply reaching the knockout stages already represents a landmark achievement. This is their first progression beyond the group stage in six AFCON appearances, making them the 33rd nation to reach the knockout rounds.
They recorded their first ever AFCON finals victory in the group stage by defeating Gabon, a result that ended a long winless run of 17 matches at the tournament. Despite losing their final group game to Cameroon after taking the lead, Mozambique showed resilience and attacking promise.
Mozambique have never kept a clean sheet at AFCON, conceding in all 18 of their matches. Every AFCON game they have played has produced goals, underlining their open and adventurous style.
Geny Catamo has been their standout performer. His goals against Gabon and Cameroon made him the first Mozambican player to score in back-to-back AFCON matches. With three AFCON goals and four goal contributions overall, he is already the most productive player in his nation’s AFCON history.
Historically, Mozambique has struggled against West African opposition. They are yet to record a win in nine matches against teams from the region, failing to score in all seven of their defeats. Nigeria will be their 10th West African opponent at AFCON.

What Is at Stake
While history, statistics and form clearly favour Nigeria, AFCON knockout football has repeatedly shown that pedigree alone does not guarantee progress. Mozambique arrive fearless, with nothing to lose and a growing belief after breaking multiple national records.
For Nigeria, anything short of a quarter-final place would be considered a disappointment. For Mozambique, another chapter of history awaits if they can defy the odds in Fes.
