Sunshine Stars Bow Out After 18 Years: NPFL Giants Relegated Following Tornadoes Defeat

Owena Boys crash out of the Nigeria Premier Football League after home loss, as relegation battle heats up ahead of final matchweek

After nearly two decades of top-flight football, Sunshine Stars FC have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). The Owena Waves’ fate was sealed following a 2-1 home defeat to Niger Tornadoes in a heartbreaking Matchday 39 encounter.

The result ends Sunshine Stars’ 18-year run in the NPFL, a stretch that saw them become one of the league’s most recognizable names, including a CAF Confederation Cup semi-final appearance in 2011 and a proud fan base rooted in Akure.

Game Summary: Tornadoes Too Strong for Akure Giants

It was a must-win fixture for Bala Abubakar’s men, but the visitors had different plans. Ismael Saraki opened scoring for Niger Tornadoes in the 28th minute with a well-placed effort. Sunshine Stars responded four minutes later through Ahmadu Liman, offering a brief moment of hope for the home supporters.

However, those hopes were dashed in the 76th minute when Daniel Akanbek restored the lead for the Ikon Allah Boys with a decisive strike. From that point, Tornadoes held firm, frustrating Sunshine’s attempts at another comeback.

Season-Long Struggles Catch Up

Sunshine Stars’ relegation has not come as a complete surprise. The Akure-based club struggled with form all season, often playing away from their traditional home ground and facing instability both on and off the pitch. With just 41 points from 39 matches, they currently sit in 19th place on the NPFL table.

Niger Tornadoes Boost Survival Hopes

For Niger Tornadoes, the win couldn’t have come at a better time. They now sit just outside the drop zone, with their NPFL survival back in their hands heading into the final day of the season.

Relegation Race Heats Up

Sunshine Stars join Lobi Stars, who have already confirmed their relegation to the Nigeria National League (NNL). Two more clubs will be relegated on the final day of the season, with Akwa United, Heartland, Elkanemi Warriors, and Katsina United all dangerously close to the drop zone.

It promises to be a tense finale as traditional heavyweights and ambitious sides fight to avoid joining Sunshine and Lobi in the second tier.
