Nigerian Sprinter Shines with 22.27s at Grand Slam Track Meet as Gabby Thomas Blazes to Victory

Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili delivered a commendable performance at the Grand Slam Track Meet in Miami, clocking a season’s best (SB) of 22.27 seconds to finish fourth in the women’s 200m final on a night that featured some of the sport’s most explosive talents.

The race was headlined by American sprint queen Gabby Thomas, who stormed to victory in a blistering 21.95 seconds, making a strong early-season statement with a sub-22 finish. Fellow Americans Tamari Davis (22.05s) and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (22.15s) followed closely behind in second and third, respectively, rounding out an all-USA top three.

Ofili, unfazed by the high-caliber field, showed grit and pace as she pushed through the curve and onto the home straight, eventually crossing the line in 22.27s—her fastest time of the 2024/2025 season so far. While she narrowly missed out on the podium, her performance signals a positive trajectory heading into the heart of the track season.

The result also earned her 11 points, placing her fourth overall in the women’s short sprints standings at the Grand Slam Track series. It’s a solid return for the 21-year-old LSU alum, who continues to represent Nigeria with distinction on the international circuit.
