The entire Southwest Zone of the Nigeria Football Referees Association has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of its revered president, Zubairu Sani Gwabba, a retired FIFA referee and former head of the referees unit of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The news of his death has sent shockwaves across the Nigerian football ecosystem, particularly within the refereeing community, where he was widely regarded as a guiding force and symbol of excellence. For many officials, administrators, and stakeholders, this loss is not just personal but deeply professional, as Zubairu’s influence shaped the standards and direction of officiating in the country.

Described by colleagues as a man of uncommon integrity and discipline, Sani’s contributions to Nigerian football extended far beyond the pitch. He was instrumental in nurturing young referees, advocating for improved welfare, and ensuring that officiating standards in Nigeria aligned with global best practices. His tenure as Head of the Referees Unit saw a renewed focus on training, assessment, and accountability, helping to restore confidence in match officiating nationwide.

Within the Southwest Zone, his leadership style was both firm and inspiring. He believed in merit, hard work, and continuous learning, values that resonated deeply with referees at all levels. His ability to combine authority with mentorship earned him admiration and respect across generations.

Speaking on behalf of the zone, the Zonal Coordinator, Jimoh Ogunmuyiwa, expressed profound grief over the loss, noting that Sani Zubairu’s death has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill. He emphasized that the late president’s vision and dedication played a crucial role in strengthening the structure and unity of the association.

In an official statement signed by Zonal Secretary Dele Atoun, the Southwest Zone extended heartfelt condolences to the late president’s immediate family, friends, colleagues, and the wider Nigerian football community. The statement highlighted his selfless service and the enduring impact of his leadership, describing him as a man whose legacy will inspire others long after his passing.

Beyond titles and achievements, Zubairu will be remembered for his humanity. He was approachable, principled, and deeply committed to the growth of others. Many referees recall his words of encouragement, timely advice, and unwavering support during challenging moments in their careers.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country and beyond, one thing remains clear: Nigerian football has lost a giant. The touchlines, training sessions, and administrative circles will all feel his absence, where his voice once guided critical decisions.

The NFRA Southwest Zone has called on its members to honour his memory by upholding the values he stood for and continuing the work he passionately championed.
