In a powerful demonstration of unity, respect, and heartfelt loss, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Referees Association (NFRA) made a solemn journey to Ijebu Ode on Tuesday morning to honor the memory of their immediate past president, Otunba Tade Azeez.
Leading the condolence visit was the current NFRA President, Hon. Sani Zubairu (FIFA Retired), accompanied by a delegation that included former NRA President Alhaji Ahmed Maude and Deputy President Sir Kelechi Mejuobi. The emotional visit was a continuation of national mourning for a man whose legacy in Nigerian football refereeing will be remembered for decades.
Also present were key figures in the refereeing community—Chairman of Ogun State Referees Council, Obayemi Olatunbosun, and his Lagos State counterpart, Adams Salauddin. They were joined by Alhaji Tasiu from Kaduna, a close friend of the late Otunba and a respected member of the referees’ family across the country.
It was a gathering not just of colleagues but of men bonded by the whistle, bound by the black shirt, and united by the enduring respect they shared for Otunba Tade Azeez.
President Zubairu and Alhaji Maude had departed Kano the previous evening, flying into Lagos before making the road trip to Ijebu Ode to pay their last respects. Their presence underscores the weight of Otunba Azeez’s contributions to football refereeing in Nigeria and beyond.

In moments like these, the world of Nigerian football pauses to reflect—not only on the games played or the matches officiated—but on the lives that shaped the game from the sidelines. Otunba Tade Azeez was one of those lives. His influence, leadership, and dedication to the growth of refereeing in Nigeria carved out a legacy that now lives on in every match and every new generation of Nigerian referees.
As the NRA continues to mourn, this visit serves as a solemn reminder of the bond that unites football officials across Nigeria—a bond built on service, sacrifice, and deep mutual respect.
