2025 Jagaban Cup: An Electrifying Start with Shocking Upsets and Memorable Performance

The much-anticipated 2025 Jagaban Cup kicked off this morning at the iconic Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, and what a thrilling start it was! The opening day delivered everything fans could hope for – unexpected results, thrilling goals, and unforgettable performances.

In the first match, it was a major upset as 36 Lions FC triumphed over the highly rated Ikorodu City with a 2-0 victory. The game began with a bang as Alex John scored the opening goal in the 9th minute. Despite relentless pressure from Ikorodu City, who fought hard for an equaliser, it was 36 Lions FC who sealed the win in the 64th minute when Alatan Azuka netted their second goal, leaving the NPFL side stunned.

The second match of the day was an emotional and closely contested affair, as Bethel FC and Broadcity FC played out a 1-1 draw. It was a game of pride as both teams battled for supremacy. Bethel FC took the lead in the 34th minute through Kelvin Briggs, but Broadcity FC fought back in the second half. Bakare Ayomide leveled the score in the 65th minute, ensuring both teams shared the spoils.

The third match of the day was an absolute goal fest, with SG Athletic making a sensational debut in the tournament, defeating Ijebu United 3-2. SG Athletic hit the ground running with relentless energy, and Chukwudi Okwosa stole the show, scoring a brace – the first in the 35+2 minute and the second in the 47th minute. Despite Ijebu United’s spirited comeback with goals from Sulaimon Rasheed and Houns Fidel, SG Athletic held on to their lead and claimed the victory with the final goal from Bakare Ayomide in the 65th minute.

The final match of the day featured a classic Ogun State derby between Imperial FC and Dino FC, both of whom play in the Creative League. Imperial FC proved that their victory in the Ogun State President Federation Cup was no fluke, as they triumphed 3-1 over Dino FC. After a series of missed opportunities, Bashir Abdulkareem opened the scoring for Imperial FC in the 25th minute. Joel Ashuku quickly doubled the lead with a header three minutes later, and David Aremo sealed the deal with a stunning solo effort. Dino FC managed a consolation goal in the 67th minute, thanks to Stephen Shedrack, but it was too little, too late.
